Diego Velasquez, a Creation of Spain’s Artistic Tradition
There are a lot of ways to express our emotion one of which is through art, although painting is not just brush strokes on a canvas; painting has various forms and styles. Painting can convey a lot of ideas, depending on what message the painter wants to communicate; the piece may be from an emotion, a symbolism, political agenda or even be with narrative content.
Spain is part of the countries that have created most of the world’s finest painters; so many of Spain’s museums are filled with works of art created by her very own painters. If you have a love for painting and scheduling a trip, then there’s no doubt that the country to visit is Spain; its museums are one of world’s excellent museums, exhibiting rare collection of paintings from different eras and a lot of different artifacts and historical objects. Some of Spanish artists have been famous during its time, especially during the time of El Siglo de Oro or Spain’s Golden Age; most of its brilliant painters emerged during that time. One particular painter who made a huge mark on painting as an art form is Diego Velasquez who is arguably one of the most famous and influential painters of Spain. He was known to be good friends with King Philip IV and his chief minister, as he was revered by his paintings, showcasing his skills and style in every portrait he has done.
Being the first child of six children, Diego Velasquez was born in a family of middle class in June 5, 1599. As early as eleven years old he started to learn painting and became an apprentice of master painter Francisco Pacheco, and when he reached the age of eighteen he was certified by the painters’ guild to be a master painter which enabled him to paint as a professional. Eventually, Diego Velasquez fell in love with his master’s daughter and chose her as his wife; he settled down in a house he bought through earnings he made in his paintings and he also purchased another house which he rented out to tenants.
Many amazing pieces launched Diego Velasquez’s career as a painter; he is one of the few Spanish painters who could really be called a master in his artistry because of the many amazing paintings he produced in his lifetime. One of most popular paintings that came alive under his brush was The Surrender of Breda which he created after meeting the great Marques de Spinola; Spinola was in awe after seeing the details of The Surrender of Breda, wondering at Diego Velasquez’s talent to translate such emotions and realism through his brush strokes. However the most well-known piece that Diego produced is Las Meninas or The Maids in Honour; it is regarded as the most viewed painting in the whole world, and it is evident that most people who are not very much familiar with Spain’s history in the world of painting knew only one Spanish painter, that is Diego Velasquez, because of Las Meninas.
There are other painters considered to be masters like Diego Velasquez, but the fact still remains that Velasquez was ahead of his generation, and that he had given much to realism through his many famous paintings.
